JPGS-UPD’s project entry entitled “Contour: Mapping for the People” won the award for being one of the best social innovations projects by student organizations. Since its first implementation, various sectors have become participants in the project such as the marginalized communities of Canlubang-Laguna (2011), farmers of Hacienda Luisita (2016), and the urban poor of Sitio San Roque (2015) and Pandi-Bulacan (2018). Through the years of project implementation, JPGS UPD has utilized the practice of countermapping with marginalized sectors in reclaiming cartography as a tool for self-empowerment and rights assertion.
Founded in 2005, JPGS UPD is a socio-civic student organization housed by the Department of Geography, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. It is also the junior arm of the Philippine Geographical Society (PGS) in spreading and popularizing geography as a discipline.
