MALAYA: Women in Geography

By Mylene De Guzman

The Department hosted the forum "Malaya (Tagalog:Free)", a forum on women in geography. In the forum, distinguished alumnae of the UP Diliman Department of Geography shared their experiences of being women geographers in various fields of practice. "Malaya" is part of Geography Week 2019 and is also in celebration of the 2019 Women's Month.

Geography Week organizers with forum panelists Atty. Avelino (first from right), Asst. Prof. De Guzman (second from right), Ms. Ilustre (second from left) and Dr. Gutierrez (center-front).
Asst. Prof. Mylene T. De Guzman provided a brief overview of the contributions of women in geography, and the application of feminist theories and methodologies in the discipline.

Ms. Kathy Ilustre shared her experiences, challenges and successes as Deputy Director of the Professional Services Department of Geodata Systems, Inc., while being a working mother.

Atty. Claine Avelino talked about how her training in geography contributed to her current profession as a lawyer, and as Sustainable Finance Engagement Manager in World Wide Fund (WWF) Philippines.

Dr. Darlene Occena – Gutierrez, College Secretary of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), shared her experiences of being a woman geographer in the field of climatology and in the academe.

The UP Diliman Department of Geography ensures that women are gainfully employed in the academe, local and national government agencies, research-oriented endeavors, grassroots-based organizations and various advocacy works. Of the Department's academic staff, eight full-time faculty members and two lecturers are women.

This forum sought to encourage more women to study, practice, and teach geography that is rooted in grassroots-based social justice.

[ARANGKADA@30] Grand Alumni Homecoming

Dear Geography Alumni,

Warm greetings from your esteemed Department!

Being a graduate of the only Geography Department in the country, you are one of those who continue to bring significant contributions to our discipline and to other related fields, whether you are directly practicing geography or indirectly using your geographic training to be where you are now. What you have accomplished is in large measure responsible for the growth and development of our institution.

We are happy to inform you that our Department will celebrate 30 years of being part of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy this November 2013 and will be holding a grand celebration to mark this milestone in our existence. With the goal of strengthening alumni relations, the Department would like to invite you to attend in our Grand Alumni Homecoming on November 30, 2013 at AS Lobby,  Palma Hall at 6PM. You may find other details at Facebook events page or at our department website.

You can also become part of the alumni homecoming by providing financial support. Your contributions will not only help in making the event successful but also in augmenting the Department’s resources for its programs and services. Your support will go a long way in strengthening our efforts at achieving academic excellence and professionalism and eventually reaching our goal of becoming the country’s Center of Development in the field of geography. For your contributions you may contact me or Ms. Rocelyn De Vera at rocelyndevera@yahoo.com. Sponsors will be entitled a space in the Homecoming's souvenir program (see details below).

We appreciate your support and honor your continued involvement with your geography family of faculty, students, staff, and alumni. We look forward to seeing you in the alumni homecoming!

Very truly yours,

[I Am A Geographer] Challenging but fun: Why I love community volunteerism

by Earvin S. Delgado

Earvin Delgado, BS Geog 2011, shared his experience of conducting information campaign on the Carood Watershed in Bohol, which was published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.  Read it here and who knows, you might get inspired and follow Earvin's path.  Not only will you get to places and, interact with various people but also practiced what you have learned and be an engaged geographer.

"I Am A Geographer" are articles featuring what our alumni are doing.  This will serve not only as an update of what they are up to (there is Facebook to do that for us!) but also as a venue for people to know what geographers actually do. So, if you have encountered any published article featuring any of our alumni, please kindly inform us through email (up.geography@yahoo.com) or maybe you can write one of your own and we will publish it here in our Cyberbulletin.
