by Timothy James L. Cipriano / Senior Lecturer, UP Department of Geography
Retired professor of geography and economics from SUNY-Westchester Community College and former Fulbright lecturer to the UP Department of Geography, Dr David Kummer donated a portion of his book collections of Filipiniana to the Department of Geography Resource collection. He gave a short talk covering issues on rare book collection and their curation. The event took place on 1st February 2023, at the Geography Conference Room, CSSP Pavilion 2, University of the Philippines Diliman.
Among the books that were turned over include biographies of specific Filipino figures, monographs and atlases on the Philippines, publications related to Filipino history, culture, society, and education, magazine clippings, and even memoirs from ambassadors and archbishops who gave anecdotes on their visits to the Philippines – most of which were dated during the first half of the 20 th century. Dr Kummer shared how these collections would hopefully help in exploring more about the history, culture, and geography of the country as well as inspire more scholars to engage in intellectual pursuits based on these rare archival materials.
On behalf of the department, Assistant Prof and OIC Dominique Sasha Amorsolo thanked Dr Kummer for his generosity in sharing these collections to the department which will surely help inform and shape future directions in Philippine geographic and historical research. Associate Dean for Administration Dr Darlene Occeña-Gutierrez hosted the event that was attended by current and former faculty members of the UP Department of Geography.
