Faculty & Staff Planning Workshop 2025 in Mataas na Kahoy, Batangas

The UP Department of Geography is currently in a 3-day planning workshop for staff and faculty. The workshop is being held in Mataas na Kahoy's Shercon Resort in Batangas.

The first workshop focuses on Quality Assessment and post-iAADs (Internal Academic Assessment and Development System) evaluation that tracks the department's academic and extension outputs consistent with its vision and goal. Two other workshops focus on graduate and undergraduate concerns ranging to admission and curriculum mapping. Faculty resources in relation to student demand will be assessed in terms of future recruitment. The graduate program (the current MS Geography and the proposed PhD program in geography) hopes to dip from the deep pool of faculty with PhDs. Finally, professional development including faculty development and succession plans will be reevaluated with the return of faculty with PhDs and new full-time and part-time (at least temporarily) hires.

Staff development involves streamlining everyday administrative tasks. The Department recognizes and appreciates the contribution of the department's non-teaching staff in relation to carrying out the complicated programming of everyday departmental activities.

The workshop also allowed time for the members of staff and faculty to perfect their synchronized swimming skills.

Film Geography Workshop: Tell a Story in 6 Shots

Can one tell a complete story in 6 shots?

To find out, come to a filmgeography workshop event on June 7, Wednesday from 1:00-4:00PM in Pavilion Room 2248 of UP Diliman.

This 3-hour workshop entitled Filmmaking as a Storytelling Tool for Research Using Your Phone invites participants to create stories that engage with environments, bodies, emotions, natures, and lifeworlds using one's cellular phone. Films are used  extensively by academicians, scholars and researchers to understand, interpret and analyse worlds, positionalities and knowledge co-productions from multiple scales. This workshop teaches the technical aspects of framing and how to make and tell stories. 

Led by Vitor Hugo Costa (Metafilmes), and Dr Jessica Jacobs (Queen Mary University of London, Film Geographies), this project is hosted by the  UP Department of Geography, the Geographic Society of the University of the Philippines ❨UP GeogSoc❩ and Junior Philippine Geographical Society - UP Diliman.

This workshop is funded by the People's Stories Project (QMUL), a collaboration between the Queen Mary University of London, UP Diliman, FilmGeographies, Metafilmes and  Megawra (Built Environment Collective) (Egypt)

Internal quality assessment workshop undertaken at the UP Department of Geography

On 14 June 2022, faculty members of the Department of Geography held an internal quality assessment workshop. The workshop aims to assess the issues and challenges faced by the department based on the results of its Internal Academic Assessment and Development System (iAADS) evaluation for years 2018 and 2021 and create feasible plans of actions to address them.

Facilitated by Dr Yany Lopez, faculty members were assigned in groups corresponding to the performance indicators of iAADS. A presentation of each group was undertaken where faculty members presented their outputs. The workshop concluded with a closing remark from the Department Chair Dr Joseph Palis. 

Department of Geography Holds Curriculum and Administrative Workshop

The Department of Geography held a Curriculum and Administrative Workshop on August 24-27, 2018 at the Dinadiawan Beach Resort in Dipaculao, Aurora.

Attended by the regular and part-time faculty, administrative and research staff, the four-day workshop resulted in the formulation of an updated Vision and Mission for the Department, strategic scheduling of Departmental events for the academic year, discussions and clarifications of various teaching, research, extension and administrative tasks. Team building activities were actively participated in by the members of the faculty and staff to foster collegiality and camaraderie.

2nd International GIScience Workshop organized by the Department and the Centre for Geoinformatics - University of Salzburg

The Department of Geography - University of the Philippines Diliman in collaboration with the Centre for Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) of the University of Salzburg,  has again successfully conducted its second International GIS faculty development workshop with the theme: “SPATIALreason: Integrating Spatial Reasoning in Interdisciplinary Research and Education” last November 4-8, 2011 at Palma Hall 207, UP Diliman, Quezon City. 

The second workshop accommodated 21 participants: two (2) from Indonesia, three (3) from Malaysia, five (5) from Thailand and 11 from the Philippines.  The Filipino participants, composed of faculty members and researchers, came from various fields.  One each from UP Diliman’s Department of History, Department of Anthropology and the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), five (5) from the college of Public Health of UP Manila and one each from the School of Environmental Science and Management and the College of Arts and Sciences of UP Los Baños.  A participant from the National Economic Development Authority – Region 7, Cebu, also joined the workshop.

With participants coming from a wide range of disciplines, GIS in interdisciplinary research and education continues to play a significant role. What makes this workshop more relevant and different from other GIS workshops/seminars, is that, it deals with the importance of understanding basic geographic concepts behind the use of the software (e.g., ARCGIS).  It emphasizes the role of spatial reasoning in understanding spatial patterns of physical and social phenomena such as land use, population, economic activities, climate, diseases and health problems, transportation and many others.  

The said workshop is one of the collaborative activities under the Academic Cooperation Agreement between the two institutions and part of the Department’s Internationalization efforts to enhance its programs and capabilities.  It was facilitated by Dr. Shahnawaz and Dr. Josef Strobl, Coordinator and Director of the Centre for Geoinformatics, respectively, and Prof. Ma. Simeona Martinez and Mr. Emmanuel Garcia, ENP of the Department of Geography - UP Diliman.

International GIScience Workshop organized by the Department and the Centre for Geoinformatics - University of Salzburg

The Department of Geography - University of the Philippines Diliman hosted a Geographic Information Science (GIScience) workshop in collaboration with the Centre for Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) - University of Salzburg last 15-19 August 2011. Entitled "SPATIALreason: Integrating Spatial Reasoning in Interdisciplinary Research and Education", the workshop emphasized the importance of "spatial reasoning" while employing geographical information system (GIS) tools. These tools can be used in various spatial analysis for natural resource management, environmental conservation, education, research, spatial planning & decision making, sustainable development, etc.

The workshop also served as a venue for the transfer of GIS know-how and networking among faculty and graduate students from the Southeast Asian region.  Participants came from Indonesia (2), Malaysia (1), Philippines (5), Thailand (6), and Vietnam (2).  Dr. Shahnawaz of Z_GIS conducted the workshop in coordination with Mr. Emmanuel Garcia and Prof. Ma. Simeona Martinez of the Department.

This is the first of the two international GIS workshops scheduled to be hosted by the Department.  The next workshop will be held on November 4-8, 2011. Both workshops are part of the international academic cooperation between the Centre for Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) - University of Salzburg, Austria and the Department of Geography - University of the Philippines Diliman.
