Geography 192: Team Semirara 2026 co-creates P3DM with community residents of Barangay Semirara, Caluya, Antique

Last July 9, July 10 and July 13, the Team Semirara of the Geography 192 field classes for midyear 2026 held its culminating activity: the Participatory 3D Mapping or P3DM that aims to engage the community to create their own tangible, representative and functional 3D map.

The three-day activity held at the Pension House, Barangay Semirara, Caluya, Province of Antique, was participated by around 70 individuals including barangay councilors, sitio and purok leaders, barangay health workers (BHWs), Disaster Operations Center (DOC) representatives, and volunteers from various sectors of the community.


From tracing, to cutting, to painting and designing, the UPD Geography team created, collaborated and co-produced knowledge with the community to create and mount a 3-dimensional map while actively discussing and learning the geographic features and backgrounds of the barangay from the participants, and explaining how the map can better serve the community, not just in mapping spaces of vulnerabilities but also as to how to add new information to the 'living map' that was produced.

The P3DM activity produced a 5ft x 6ft topographic map with information on infrastructures, land use, capacities, road networks, and several hazard areas including flood, storm surge and rain-induced landslide.

Inset maps were also produced to zoom in on densely populated areas of the barangay for household mapping with information on building material and vulnerabilities by assigning household and building ID numbers that are linked to a database.

2025 Geography 192 Team Caluya conducts P3DM in Barangay Sabang, Caluya Island, Province of Antique, July 16-18, 2025

Is the inclusion of diverse local knowledges a guarantee that there will be shared stewardship of the community? Can community mapping help redefine social cohesion in relation to risk and disaster?

When the Participatory 3D Mapping (P3DM) was introduced by the UP Department of Geography through the Geography 192 (Field Methods) class to Barangay Sabang in Caluya Island, Province of Antique, the response from the community was immediate and enthusiastic. P3DM has the potential to be transformative in translating the knowledge systems of the community into something materially concrete where the community themselves can take an active role in updating the 3D map based on shifting demographics and environmental changes.

Taking place from July 16-18, 2025 and with close coordination with the Caluya Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) and Municipal Planning and Development Office (MPDO), a 3D model of Barangay Sabang was co-created by community participants with the assistance of the Geog 192 class under the supervision of three UP Geography professors. Mapping and plotting households were undertaken along with identified vulnerabilities and locally-derived capacities. The 3-day activity not only identified the hazards specific to the area but also conducted a risk assessment of the community.

Like most community endeavors that place premium on local knowledge, capacity-building, and giving agency to the community to undertake their own plans mindful of the barangay’s vulnerabilities and capacities, P3DM allows them to take an active role in assessing and planning their mitigation strategies in the event of a disaster.

So to respond to the question posed above, local knowledges alone will not guarantee successful stewardship of the environment, it is in the empowerment of local decision-making that the community’s sustainable futures can be achieved.

PGS Lecture Series 2021-04: Emmanuel Garcia on participatory 3D mapping and community management

In this Philippine Geographical Society (PGS) Lecture Series, PGS President Emmanuel Garcia, EnP discusses the role of Participatory 3-Dimensional Mapping (P3DM) in integrating indigenous and local geographical knowledge with data on topography to create stand-alone, scaled, and georeferenced 3D models useful in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM).



Emmanuel Garcia is an assistant professor at the UP Department of Geography. A geographer and licensed environmental planner, he specializes in community-based disaster risk reduction and management and land-use planning. His research interests include heritage mapping and transport and development.
